GAA chiefs need to get a meaningful 'B Championship' right - Colm Collins

Colm Collins has made it clear to Clare officials where he stands on the tier two proposal ahead of Saturday’s vote.

Special Congress at Pairc Ui Chaoimh will consider a motion to prevent Division Three and Four teams from playing in the qualifiers from next year, unless they reach a provincial final.

Those counties would then play in a knockout second tier competition instead while the qualifiers would be reduced from four rounds to two.

Although a number of counties have indicated that they will be voting in favour, the proposal has been widely panned by players and managers from the affected counties.

Clare boss Collins has long been an advocate for changing the Championship structure but insists that this isn’t the answer.

He said: “I think we’re crying out for a meaningful B championship but I think we need to get it right.

“We have toyed with this kind of thing in the past and we haven’t really covered ourselves in glory on it so I think it’s important to get it right and I think if this motion passes I don’t think it’s going to be a success.

“I don’t think it’s the correct way to do it but the problem is that to address this in a meaningful way you’re going to have to suspend the provincial championships for a couple of years and I don’t think the sky is going to fall in if we do that.

“I think it would be worthwhile and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work but I just think that consigning a team to the B championship because of previous year’s form is not a good way to go about it.

“I think that there’s no question or doubt about it, it’s crying out for a meaningful B championship but it’s important to get it right, that’s all.”

He has relayed his feelings to the Clare delegation.

“Well I’ve been at a meeting and we’ve discussed it, yeah,” he explained. “I’m not quite sure that they have definitely nailed their colours to the mast one or the other but we’ve had a meeting on it and discussed it, yeah.”
