GAA cancel All Stars banquet amid spiralling Covid-19 case numbers

The GAA has cancelled next month’s PwC All Stars banquet due to spiralling Covid-19 case numbers.

The event was provisionally pencilled in for Friday, December 10 at the Convention Centre in Dublin but, for the second successive year, will not now take place.

The GAA said that the “decision has been taken with health and safety in mind” and instead an awards programme will be broadcast on RTE Two from 7-8.30pm on the same evening, similar to that of last February when the 2020 All Stars were announced.

The Joe McDonagh Cup Team of the Year and Champion 15 from the lower tier hurling competitions were also due to be honoured, along with the various Player of the Year award winners.

Pre-pandemic, the All Star banquet was staged in October or November though, for a number of reasons, the Limerick hurlers’ recent team holiday among them, it was pushed back into December this year.

The LGFA staged their All Star banquet last weekend while the Camogie Association also made the decision to postpone the awards.
