GAA cancel 2020 season tickets due to uncertainty over crowds

The GAA has cancelled 2020 season tickets due to uncertainty over crowds being permitted at inter-county games.

In an email sent to season ticket holders this afternoon, it is claimed that a lack of clarity from Government on spectator numbers left the association with no choice but to make an 'unwelcome decision'.

Adult tickets will be subject to a €40 refund and juvenile ticket refunds will be worth €10.

Club Championships returned last month but attendances at outdoor sporting events are still limited to 200, which includes players, coaches, referees, journalists and administrators.

If Government proceeds with its delayed Phase 4 plans on August 10, attendances of up to 500 will be allowed at matches.

But the GAA has made the call to abandon season tickets for this year's inter-county Championships, which get underway in October.

"Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and with no clarity on the potential number of spectators allowed in attendance for our proposed Inter County Championship later in the year we have been left with no option but to cancel your GAA Season Ticket for 2020," the email read.

"Your Season Ticket will not be eligible for the remainder of the 2020 Season. A refund of €40 for all Adult Tickets and €10 for all Juvenile Tickets will be paid into your accounts within the next two weeks.

"We have delayed taking this step until now as we hoped that Government guidelines would be eased to the point where we could accommodate all Season Ticket holders to attend their chosen games.

"This is becoming increasingly uncertain and has led us to make this unwelcome decision.Thank You for your understanding throughout these uncertain times. Season Tickets will be available for renewal for 2021 which we will contact you about in due course."

The Irish Mirror reported in April that the GAA updated the terms of the season ticket scheme in March as the coronavirus pandemic played havoc with the fixtures calendar.

The updated terms and conditions stated that holders would not be entitled to a refund if competitions were postponed due to factors outside the control of the association - such as a pandemic.

But the GAA later confirmed that partial refunds or discounts would be offered.
