Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has obtained approval from the leaders of the Group of Seven nations to hold the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in full to prove that humans will overcome the new coronavirus, he told reporters at the Prime Minister's Office following a videoconference with the leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
Abe was asked by reporters about the timing of the Games, but he avoided giving a clear answer.
The 50-minute video conference was held to discuss measures for the coronavirus pandemic, and was the first among the G7 leaders, according to the government.
The leaders also agreed to cooperate in developing medicines to prevent the growing spread of infections. Abe emphasized during the meeting that "the most important thing to mitigate the concerns of people around the world is to develop medicines." The leaders reaffirmed that they would cooperate in developing treatments for the disease by bringing together the wisdom of the world.
They also discussed the increasingly uncertain global economy and reached an agreement to implement necessary and sufficient economic and fiscal measures through coordinated efforts by the G7 nations.
