G20 to discuss digital economy on 1st day

The summit meeting of the Group of 20 major economies, which be held in Osaka on June 28 and 29, will kick off with discussions on the digital economy before shifting focus to the empowerment of women the following day, according to the schedule announced by the government Thursday.

The leaders will wrap up the summit by compiling a declaration on the digital economy, reform of the World Trade Organization and women's empowerment. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is scheduled to hold a press conference as chair of the meeting following its conclusion.

On the first day, the leaders will start discussions at a working lunch, at which they are expected to agree on establishing the Osaka Track, a framework for creating rules on data governance to promote the free flow of data across borders. In the evening, Abe will host a banquet for the visiting leaders.

The empowerment of women will be a major topic of discussion the following day. Relevant organizations will make proposals in the morning, when Ivanka Trump, an adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump and his eldest daughter, will also attend. At the luncheon, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach will give a speech calling for the more active participation in society by young people and the disabled.

Abe is scheduled to hold separate meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. His meeting with Trump is scheduled for June 28 and one with Russian President Vladimir Putin for June 29.
