The red bows that appear around trees and homes in Yarralumla at Christmas time have been taken up by the most famous home in the suburb, Government House.

The Yarralumla Residents Association approached Government House to take part in their red bow tradition, which started in 2019.

Governor-General David Hurley and his wife Linda happily accepted the invitation.

"The Governor-General and Mrs Hurley have seen the bows around the local community and were delighted to join in," Government House told us.

"A call went out for volunteers to help adorn the trees on Dunrossil Drive, the front gate and some of the trees inside the gates.

"It was a fun, team effort and the result is fantastic. Hopefully local residents are able to pop down and enjoy what will now be an annual tradition at Government House."

Yarralumla Residents Association immediate past president David Harvey said the Christmas bows were initiated in Yarralumla last by the association and he hoped they would become a Canberra-wide tradition.

Some streets such as Woolls Street, Turner Place and Rodway Street were now fully decorated.

"We even have red bows outside the Saudi Arabian Embassy," Mr Harvey said.

"We approached the Governor-General and his wife to suggest the red bows as being a way to spread goodwill at this time of year, particularly since so many public events have been cancelled.

"It's a very simple and inexpensive idea - each bow costs about $5.

"It would be great if red bows spread all over Canberra in future years."
