Future of O'Devaney Gardens development remains in doubt after council agree to rescind vote on sale

The future of the O'Devaney Gardens development continues to be in doubt after a motion to put the sale of the land on hold was approved by Dublin City Council.

A special meeting of the council was held on Monday following the vote earlier this month to proceed with the sale to Bartra.

Independent councillors, Sinn Fein and People Before Profit signed a motion to rescind the previous vote on the deal.

It will now be brought back to the December meeting of Dublin City Council for discussion with members.

Independent councillor Anthony Flynn said: ''There are doubts surrounding the legality of the vote and we have moved to have it put back on the agenda for discussion at the December meeting.

"We cannot viably give away €85m worth of land in the middle of a housing crisis.

"This is prime land that should be built on directly by council alongside voluntary housing bodies, not gifted to vulture funds for profit.

"Councillors who are promoting a mythical idea that monies will be available to buy these units back at a cost of €500,000 per unit are being completely unrealistic and relying on the generosity of a developer.

"The whole thing is a mess, a Christmas fairytale that will never come true.''
