Future of Leeds libraries set to be decided

The future of Leeds' library service is likely to be discussed by senior councillors later this month.

Members of the council's executive board are likely to consider the proposals at their next meeting on May 18. A press briefing on the proposals has been called for Monday afternoon at the Civic Hall.

Leeds council's 'New Chapter' review looks at how library services are provided in Leeds.

A public consultation finished earlier this year on the proposals, which could see up to 20 local library buildings closing, some services moving into other council buildings such as one stop shops, other libraries opening longer and more mobile libraries being introduced.

Libraries facing potential closure across the city include:

Allerton Bywater; Armley Heights; Belle Isle; Broad Lane; Cow Close; Drighlington; Holbeck; Ireland Wood; Kirkstall; Lofthouse; Methley; Osmondthorpe; Rawdon; Richmond Hill; Scholes; Shadwell; Swarcliffe; Swillington; Swinnow and Whinmoor.

Updated Friday, 5.06pm: The second paragraph of this story was changed to clarify that Monday's press event is a briefing rather than formal conference.
