Future of Dumbarton and Balloch stores in doubt as owners call in administrators

The future of two clothing shops in Dumbarton and Balloch is in doubt after owners called in administrators.

Edinburgh Woollen Mill has announced it plans to appoint administrators in an attempt to save the business.

The firm has a store at Loch Lomond Shores and also owns Peacocks, which has a unit in Dumbarton High Street.

Antartex Shopping Village in Alexandria also stocks Edinburgh Woollen Mill clothing, as well as Jaeger, another brand the company owns.

The move puts 21,000 jobs at risk amid what the company described as “brutal” trading conditions.

Steve Simpson, chief executive of Edinburgh Woollen Mill, said the past seven months have been “extremely difficult” as he warned normal trading will be “impossible” in the wake of a second coronavirus outbreak.

He said “significant cuts and closures” would be inevitable.

The stores will continue to trade as a review of the firm is carried out.

Edinburgh Woollen Mill (EWM), which is owned by billionaire businessman Philip Day, has 1,100 stores for its brands.
