Future Celtic recruit Liam Shaw warned over tackling after rash Sheffield Wednesday red card

Future Celtic signing Liam Shaw has been cautioned to rein in his overzealous tackling after receiving the second yellow card of his fledgling career in Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat to Birmingham City.

The 19-year-old’s rash challenge on Maxime Colin in the second half earned the ire of referee Lee Mason, leading to a second yellow and a warning from manager Neil Thompson over his future combative play.

It was Shaw’s first appearance since inking a pre-contract agreement with the Parkhead club effective in the summer.

The Hoops snared the teenager from under The Owls’ noses, with the Hillsborough academy product set to move to the Scottish Premiership when his deal in Yorkshire expires for a £300,000 cross-border fee.

Shaw has already been sent off once this season after receiving his marching orders against Reading in December.

Scott Hogan would go on to score the only goal of the game to leave Wednesday three points from safety in the Championship relegation places.

And Thompson, who insisted earlier this week he had no concerns over the youngster’s commitment to the club after agreeing the transfer, warned Shaw to learn from his mistakes.

Speaking after the match, he told Glasgow Live's sister site Yorkshire Live: “Years ago it’s a tackle and a Birmingham throw-in.

"You can’t leave the ground. He’s only a little bit off the ground but you’re deemed out of control. The lad’s devastated that he’s been sent off and it impacts as to how we play as a team.

"But it’s part of football, when you make a mistake – whether it’s with the ball or whether you get sent off – you’ve got learn from it and I'm sure he will. He's only a young lad.

"It was just his enthusiasm to go and win the ball.

"He might have to be a little bit more disciplined in what he does, but at the end of the day you don't want to take that tenacity out of anybody.

"If there's a player who enjoys the physical challenge and that tackling side of the game, you don't have to knock it out of him you just have to be a bit more calculated."
