A one-punch attack in a post-match brawl has landed a Canberra futsal player in jail.
Kerim Hidic, 23, was found guilty in July of inflicting grievous bodily harm when he hit a man in the face.
The referee described the game as "essentially uncontrollable".
He said he had shut it down before the end of the second half.
Hidic did not deny hitting the man, but maintained he was trying to protect a friend.
The court heard the victim suffered facial injuries that left one eye so badly hurt it affected his ability to hold a drivers' licence for months.
The court heard the victim had said that "everything went black and he could feel broken teeth and blood running down his face" at the time of the attack.
And that the man still had the injuries on his wedding day and was not able to get eye surgery until almost a year after the incident.
Hidic's lawyer Jason Moffett urged Chief Justice Helen Murrell to consider a suspended sentence or a corrections order so Hidic could serve his sentence in the community.
"He recognises the harm he has caused," Mr Moffett said.
"He would apologise to the victim if he had an opportunity to do so."
The court heard Hidic would not return to playing futsal, saying he no longer plays team sports for fear his competitive nature may make him act aggressively again.
But prosecutor Soraya Saikal doubted Hidic's remorse.
"There was ... limited remorse immediately following the events, in fact there was none," she said.
Hidic has been free on bail since the incident.
But today Chief Justice Murrell revoked bail and sent him to jail while he was assessed for an intensive corrections order.
He has also been ordered to pay more than $13,500 to the victim.
Hidic will be formally sentenced in October.
