The John Curtin gallery presents an installation that examines the challenging relationship between life, engineering and labour. The multi-sensory art installation Futile Labor allows visitors to experience the growth and movement of a tissue–engineered muscle housed and fed in a custom designed “living machine”.
Through electrical stimulation, the muscle cells contract and their resulting movement is translated into vibration, light and sound. The installation was born out of a collaborative artistic research project by Dr Ionat Zurr and Oron Catts from SymbioticA and multi-disciplinary artist Dr Chris Salter.
