'Fussy eater', 10, raising money for sick brother's hospital by eating foods she hates

A girl aged 10 ate food she hates including Marmite, sprouts, olives and Spam to raise money for a hospital that cared for her poorly brother.

Jessie Atkins-Bromley gagged as she ate a range of things she detests after Charlie Bromley was diagnosed with tethered cord syndrome, which left him in agony.

He had major surgery for the condition, which led to extreme constipation, at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, in February.

Jessie, of Wallingford, Oxon, did not turn her nose up at a single challenge and raised £700, more than triple her original goal of £200.

Mum Lauren Atkins, 27, said: “She is such a fussy eater and people were suggesting love it or hate it foods like Marmite, olives and Spam.

"She’s done really well. She hasn’t said no to anything.”

Charlie began to suffer with constipation last year and a health visitor helped get a referral for an MRI scan.

Doctors at the hospital diagnosed him with TCS in September –meaning a fatty mass by his spinal cord was pulling on it and preventing it from growing normally.

Lauren said: “It was nice to have a name for it and have some understanding of what it was, finally.

“But equally it was terrifying because the condition can have lifelong effects.”

Doctors successfully operated to “detether” the nerves and spinal cord from the mass.

However it left big sister Jessie “struggling to sleep” because the experience had been so “unsettling”.

A JustGiving page was set up for donations and dares. Proud Lauren said: “When we told Jessie how much she had raised, she was just amazed.

"We’re so proud – it’s nice to give back to an amazing hospital.”
