Fusion Students in bid to build 31-storey Birmingham resi block

A student accommodation firm is planning to build more than 700 new bedrooms in Birmingham in a development reaching up to 31 storeys.

London-based Fusion Students has unveiled new proposals for a derelict site in Edgbaston once occupied by the Tall Trees pub at the corner of the A38 Bristol Road and Lee Bank Middleway.

If approved, the project would be built over a series of six connected blocks next to the McDonald's restaurant ranging from one to 31 storeys, with the tallest element fronting onto Bristol Road.

The development would comprise a mix of studio apartments and shared cluster flats, providing space for 732 residents, alongside shared facilities such as a cinema room, basketball court, gym and laundry but no parking.

The application site is well connected to the city centre via bus routes and the new A38 cycle lane which opened last year while both University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University have campuses within walking distance.

It has been vacant for more than ten years and was recently used by workers building the new A38 cycle lane.

The project would herald a debut in the Midlands for Fusion which currently operates student halls in Cardiff, Sheffield, Swansea and Hatfield in Hertfordshire.

A public consultation has been launched into the project ahead of a planning application being  submitted.

Fusion said: "The proposals will transform the site and create a modern, attractive and accessible development at a key gateway into both the city centre and Edgbaston."

The project would "complete" the redevelopment of the crossroads at Bristol Road and Lee Bank Middleway where Park Central estate and Belgrave View student flats already sit.

And in 2018 Barratt Homes won the green light to start work on 778 residential units diagonally opposite the application site at the former home of Matthew Boulton College and St Luke's housing estate.
