Fury over 'shameful' and 'disrespectful' scorch marks at Calanais Standing Stones

A 'disappointing' photograph shared online shows burn marks next to the historic Calanais Standing Stones.

The scorch marks have been slammed as disrespectful after they were spotted near the key heritage site in Lewis.

A picture was shared online slamming the incident as "selfish" as two circles of charred grass can be seen.

The caption read: "Very disappointed to see scorch marks above the Callanish Stones in Lewis. Spoiling the countryside for others, very selfish and reckless. Shame on you!"

People were quick to comment on the post as they noted it was "incredibly sad" and branded those responsible as "hooligans".

One person said: "It’s an important part of our heritage. Not just grass."

Another added: "That is so disrespectful. How can people be so thoughtless . People like that should stay at home."

Others also called for countryside rangers to drive around tourists spots and deter this kind of behaviour.

While most locals were outraged at the "awful" and "shameful" incident, some added that it was likely just a fire made by campers and not a deliberate vandal attack.
