Fury over plans to transform Whitley Bay bowling green as residents say it will 'spoil the view'

Plans to build a new club house and car park at a Whitley Bay bowling green have been slammed by furious residents who say it will spoil their view.

Rockcliffe Bowling and Tennis Club wants to tear down its existing clubhouse and replace it with a modern building, and put a members' only carpark on land that is currently a tennis court.

A design and access statement said that the club's popularity in the area means it needs the new facility.

"The facility has proved very successful and a high demand for a modern clubhouse has been sought. The current bowling clubhouse sits on the land in which the proposed development would sit," it said.

But nearby residents aren't happy and have submitted scores of objections to the North Tyneside C ouncil.

They raised fears about the loss of the tennis court and that the new building would spoil their view.

One wrote: "Position completely moved from previous facility now blocks view of seafront for residents and bowlers alike.

"Is an over development of what is a small strip of grass."

Another resident said: "We should not allow the transfer of precious recreational space, to parking.

"My understanding is that the club look after the land to maintain recreational activity on the site. I believe that if at all possible the site should be used for recreation.

"This development will have a negative impact on the view from my property."

A third objector said they would be sad to see the existing club house go.

They added: "I would strongly object to the demolition of the existing clubhouse, which is a characterful building that would be a loss to the area."

The design and access statement said the new building would not be high enough to impact on the view.

It said: "The overall height of the scheme is designed to not impact on views of nearby homes and particularly that of St Anne’s care home, the single-storey development will have minimal affect on nearby developments and has been specifically designed to achieve the minimal effect."

The council's planning department is expected to decide on the application by the end of June.

Rockcliffe Bowling and Tennis Club declined to comment.
