Fury over 'nurses in bin bags' after Matt Hancock PPE claim

A Labour MP has hit back at Matt Hancock after the Health Secretary claimed there was never a "national shortage" of PPE.

Mr Hancock  appeared on Good Morning Britain today (February 23), to answer questions on the ruling his PPE contracts broke the law.

Under pressure from Piers Morgan, back up by Susanna Reid, Hancock claimed there had never been an outage of protective gear in the UK, drawing fury from the hosts.

And now Angela Rayner, Shadow First Secretary of State, has taken to Twitter to give her view the debate.

Ms Rayner, the representative for Ashton under Lyne, said: "There were nurses being sent into Covid wards in bin bags. Care workers being forced to reuse masks going from home to home.

"The NAO report found 30% of frontline workers reported PPE shortages. How can @MattHancock say this to the frontline workers he has so badly let down?"

The tweet has received more than 1,000 likes and been retweeted more than 300 times.

During the interview this morning, Piers Morgan fumed at Hancock's suggestion he and his team should be thanked, rather than criticised, for their handling of the pandemic.

The Health Secretary said: "I think we should be on this show thanking my team, they worked so hard."

But Piers fired back: "If you wanna play that game with us, you and your team have resided over a woeful handling of this pandemic that has led to us having the worst death toll in Europe."

He added: "So I’m sorry if my first thought when you come on is not to thank you and your team for their brilliant handling of this pandemic."
