Fury over new modern copper-clad yoga studio being built among Victorian cottages

Residents are furious about a new modern copper-decorated yoga studio being built among historic Victorian cottages.

Angry neighbours claim the "ugly" building will cause irreparable damage to the upmarket area.

Plans for the swanky studio in Osney Island, Oxford were approved in 2019 and it is still under construction.

Instructor James Pritchard, 68, got the green light in February 2021 to build the studio on the same road as 19th-century homes.

However, locals are not impressed with the architecture.

Designer and neighbour Bianca Elgar told the MailOnline: "It will disturb the lovely peaceful life here on Osney."

Retired vicar Vernon Orr said: "To knock down [the current building] and replace it with a two-storey house or studio is wrong.

"The design is very unusual. It's copper-cladded, chocolate-coloured with the most unusual placement of windows and doors."

He expressed his disappointment in the development being erected on "Oxford's best residential street".

One critic warned it would "change the nature of the street forever".

A man who lives next door to the studio is so against it he's left a passive-aggressive message for anyone to see.

It is a poster with a famous Dolly Parton quote, reading: "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap."

The new yoga studio replaced a workshop on East Street - where properties fetch a price tag of £650,000.

The studio is still being developed.

Council officers have insisted the proposal "would accord with the special character and appearance of the conservation area".

Owner James has stood by his design claiming the copper was chosen so the building will "disappear" into the background.

James, who has been teaching yoga for more than 20 years, also suggested that council officials told him to keep the design modern.

He told the MailOnline he hopes to be open Monday to Sunday to "bring yoga to the wider Oxford community".
