Fury breaks out as Brit in US asks for sandwich to be buttered - but result is baffling

There are many culture differences between the UK and the US – particularly when it comes to sandwiches. For example, our neighbours the pond have only just recently discovered the wonders of the crispy butty - what a loss to them.

Now another heated transatlantic discussion has broken out after a British tourist in the US asked for his bread to be buttered – and people were utterly baffled by the result.

Taking to Reddit, the British tourist shared a picture of the bizarre-looking sandwich, with the caption: "They don't butter their sandwiches across the pond. This is what happened when my Dad asked for his to be buttered."

The picture showed a sandwhich, which was cut in half – and the outside was slathered in butter.

The post has since gone viral, with thousands of people in disbelief at the strange logic – however people from the US were defending the sandwich maker.

One person asked: "Surely even just logic alone would tell you the butter would be on the inside. Why would you butter the outside of the bread?"

Another suggested: "Only reason I can think for the outside Butter would be making a toastie, which obviously isn't the case here."

Another added: "My girlfriend is from the US and when I asked her if she'd buttered the bread for a sandwich she looked at me like I'd just grown a second head."

A third simply said: "That's a crime against humanity."

A fourth commented: "Monstrosity. My condolences at this difficult time."

While a commenter from the US asked: "American here. Equally confused. You butter the inside of your sandwich bread?"

Another confirmed: "It's true, butter on sandwiches is not a thing widely done in the US."

"Butter on a cold sandwich? That's not common in America at all. Butter is used for toasted sandwiches and fancy buns in America," added another.
