Fury at plans to build dozens of luxury homes on green belt at popular Wirral golf course

People are furious at plans to build dozens of "executive homes" on a Merseyside golf course developers say is part of a scheme to make it a "world-class" sporting facility.

The project for Prenton Golf Club will see a brand new clubhouse and wider 18-hole course regenerated.

But a public consultation event last week was attended by more than 100 people who argue the 22-home plan will mean "destruction of the local green belt and woodland".

Pegasus Group, consultants for Prenton Golf Club, dispute that, and say it will turn it into a "world class" facility.

The firm said while the homes are just a part of the application, without the funding created by them, the club faces potential closure.

A spokesman for residents opposing the application said on Monday: "These plans will further erode the borough’s green belt in a scheme that sees the permanent destruction of ancient woodland and established ponds along with the eradication of habitat for local wildlife in the area.

"There is a groundswell of public opinion on the Wirral against the application and against the continuous erosion and destruction of the borough’s green spaces.

"These plans have angered many in the community, including club members, as the needs of private business seemingly overrule the needs and rights of the community and local heritage."

He said a new group has been formed made up of Bebington and Prenton residents, and they submitted a formal objection last week.

Ahead of the deadline closing on May 10, the golf club held a public consultation event over the proposals, attended by councillors and members of the public.

The plans will also include part of the course being remodelled, with the proposed clubhouse in a new location to make way for the 22 homes.

Developers say the current clubhouse is "ageing", and it's hoped the new one will enable a "dramatic setting" to attract more functions.

A spokesman for Pegasus Group said the redevelopment of the club will see a "world-class" resort with a "high-energy, efficient" new building that could revitalise the club "for the next 100 years-plus".

He also said the club had received more than 150 letters in support.

“A team of quality consultants are on board to ensure this proposal is conducted to a high standard whereby the benefits outweigh any harm," the statement continued.

"While a small proportion of the site falls into private Green Belt land, the majority of land is situated within defined residential curtilage and brownfield land. A minimal number of trees will be removed as result of the scheme, and only those of poor specimens and there will be significant re-planting across the site resulting in many more trees than there are at present.

“It was agreed to hold a public consultation event in order for local residents to view the plans, speak to the experts and provide feedback and comments. It was unfortunate that a group of objectors engaged prior to the event, and as such discouraged interested members of the public from attending.

"Despite this, 157 letters of support have been submitted to Wirral Borough Council from those who have acknowledged the significant benefits of the proposals and the potential exciting time ahead for Prenton Golf Club’s members and future members.”

It's not the only recent golf course-related development that's made headlines in Wirral in recent times.

Earlier this year, hundreds of people turned out at Wirral Council 's Wallasey Town Hall HQ to protest against controversial plans for a £200m golf course development in Hoylake.

Those proposals are still at an early stage, but if they go ahead, will include a hotel, two golf courses and housing.
