Fury at M&S logo change shoppers demand retailer 'shows some respect'

M&S has found itself in hot water with shoppers recently, after a small but noticeable change to its social media presence.

The high street giant has recently changed its logo to reflect the colours of the LGBTQ+ flag. The logo change marks the month of June as Pride Month.

But some shoppers have hit out at the brand for the change, asking for M&S to "show some respect" and instead mark the Queen's Jubilee in their logo. Others said that the brand needs to "show a bit of patriotism", the Manchester Evening News reports.

Shopper Liz Livock fumed: "For goodness sake M&S!! It's the Queen's Platinum Jubilee ~ an event so special we will NEVER see one again. Get real and show a bit of patriotism." Rob Farrow slammed: "Jubilee first M&S. Show some respect and patriotism first before showing it for pride etc."

Debbie Garner moaned: "I would have thought it would be to do with the Jubilee." And Eileen Dickson said: "What is this all about !!! It’s the Queens 70 year reign."

Rob Farrow said it should be "Jubilee first" and said: "Show some respect and patriotism first before showing it for pride etc." Meanwhile, Carole Clegg said: "Your profile picture should be about the Jubilee. What's that supposed to be ??? M&S, just fly our Queens flag. She's earnt it."

And Angela Fuller called on M&S to "show a bit of patriotism". But others pointed out that M&S has a lot of Jubilee-themed food and drinks in their store.

Some people were not fussed either way, with Theresa Robinson commenting: "Who cares really? I'm not a royalist but realise some people are, and I'm also very accepting of people's of sexuality/genders. Just be happy people!"

And Katy Parry said: "Oof calm down people, your homophobia is showing...and that doesn't look good on anyone, regardless of how many pretty M&S pieces you have."

This months marks 50 years since the very first Pride march in the UK, which was a response to the Stonewall Riots in 1969.

An M&S spokesperson: “M&S is a proud sponsor of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee pageant to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70-year reign and is celebrating the momentous occasion across all stores and channels. Like many other retailers, we have updated our social media logos to mark the start of Pride month, as we did last year.

We are also doubling donations to Akt , the national LGBTQ+ youth homeless charity and one of our Sparks charity partners, for the duration of June."
