Fury as senseless driver tears up turf next to graves at Ayrshire cemetery

A driver has been branded 'disrespectful and irresponsible' after tearing up turf next to graves at Kilwinning Cemetery.

The vehicle was taken up a footpath – meant only for pedestrians – where it was essentially driven over the edges of nearby lairs.

Work will now be carried out to repair the grass and new turf will be layed where necessary following the incident on Wednesday, October 9.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie, Cabinet Member for Place, said: “We are all shocked by this. It is a very unusual case and something that hasn’t happen before.

“We are not sure how the driver ended up on the path. Perhaps it was an oversight but to then drive away, without reporting this mess, is disrespectful and irresponsible.

“We apologise for any distress caused by this action to bereaved families. Cemeteries are special and really important places to them.  If you saw anything, please get in touch with North Ayrshire Council.  Officers will restore the area as soon as possible.”

If anyone has any information relating to this can you please call North Ayrshire Council on 01294 310000 and ask for Streetscene.
