Fury as 'selfish' drivers block road delaying emergency worker rushing to crash

An emergency worker has slammed "selfish" drivers who blocked him from getting to a car crash by parking on double yellow lines.

Visitors parked on both sides of the B6160 near Bolton Abbey in North Yorkshire, yesterday making it "totally impassable" and delayed a recovery vehicle by 25 minutes.

Lewis Owbridge-Kestell was driving the vehicle on behalf of North Yorkshire Police to attend the crash in Kettlewell, which was 10 miles away, Yorkshire Live reports.

He said: "It was totally impassable due to everyone parking on double yellows.

"Everyone had parked so selfishly with no regard for safety or the double yellows, if emergency services were trying to get to a life or death situation it would have resulted in a serious delay."

Mr Owbridge-Kestell said he to get out of his vehicle and plea to people to get back into their cars and move so that he could get through.

He said: "It took approximately 25 minutes to get through. Oncoming cars trying to pass the parked vehicles were stuck in the centre of the road being unable to proceed causing myself to mount the grass verge to pass them.

"I didn't head back the same way but I imagine the delays continued through the afternoon.

Mr Owbridge-Kestell said luckily everyone involved in the crash wasn't injured but police were "a little annoyed" at his delay in getting there.

As a local to Bolton Abbey, he said he found it "embarrassing" people had ignored the fact the site was over capacity.

He added: "I personally wouldn't have even dreamt about visiting the abbey when it was so busy due to the worry about the virus."
