Fury as Iceland tells NHS workers if they 'touch products they have to buy them'

Supermarket giant Iceland have come under fire for telling NHS staff they had to buy any products they touched while shopping.

The frozen food retailer introduced priority hours to make shopping easier for frontline workers during the coronavirus  crisis.

But a policy on the store’s website warned that "if NHS workers touch products they have to buy them, they can't put them back".

The supermarket added that the measure was enforced to “reduce the risk of contamination” but the rules have caused considerable outrage online.

One Glasgow Live reader, whose daughter-in-law is a nurse, told us he planned to boycott the stores after hearing about the restrictions NHS workers and carers faced.

He told Glasgow Live : “I am shocked and disgusted by this statement, NHS staff have the highest infection control methods there are, they washing their hands more than anyone, they change gloves constantly.

“I for one will be boycotting Iceland from today.”

Update: Iceland has now apologised for the 'error' and removed it from their website.

An Iceland spokesperson told our sister title the Liverpool ECHO : "This was an error and should not have been posted on our website.

"We sincerely apologise for the offence this has clearly caused, and have immediately withdrawn this guidance.

"We are deeply grateful to the NHS and all key workers for everything they are doing to keep the country running.”
