Families forced to 'dodge' cars driving into public parks

Families were forced to 'dodge' cars driving onto popular city parks by 'selfish' motorists.

The ECHO received pictures of vehicles driving in two popular parks in south Liverpool in recent weeks.

Yesterday, images on social media showed a car driving along a pedestrian route at The Wavertree Playground - also known as The Mystery.

One social media user said families had to 'dodge the car' as it drove through the park.

Local Councillor Clare Mcntyre reacted angrily to the images, tweeting: "There is huge car park - one part by tennis centre and the other part by the aquatic centre. Absolutely no need for this - selfish, dangerous and encroaching on green space which is for all of us to use and relax in."

Other images taken at The Mystery show a number of cars parked up on the grass next to the football pitches, which it is reported people were driving into before collecting their children.

But The Mystery isn't the only place where this problem is occurring.

We were also sent images of a large number of cars parked on grassland at Otterspool Park, close to the promenade in Aigburth on Sunday.

An earlier image shows a car parked in the middle of the park, with two people sat next to it in camping chairs.

As more people get out to enjoy green spaces in the good weather, there are fears that someone could be hurt if people continue to drive onto popular parks.

In Wavertree, Cllr McIntyre and ward colleague Cllr Angela Coleman are growing increasingly worried about the situation.

Cllr McIntyre said: "We are really concerned about the safety of everyone who uses this park so have alerted City Watch. It is only a matter of time before someone is hurt by a vehicle.

"Since the pandemic, green spaces have become even more essential.

"Nature needs to be at the heart of our response to the impact of the COVID-19 and to build more resilience for the future.

"Vehicles driving into The Mystery — when there are huge free places to park by the aquatic centre and tennis centre — will not be tolerated.

"This is dangerous and selfish behaviour and ruining our park which is for all of us to use for play, relaxing , exercise and wellbeing."

The councillors said the issue at The Mystery is increasing and they have reported it to council officers, who said bollards will replace a damaged barrier to try and stop cars accessing the park.

Parents and carers of children visiting local football teams have also been contacted and told not to drive onto the park.
