Fury as fallen trees in cemetery still not cleared

Large trees which toppled into a cemetery in the Wirral have still not been removed over a month later.

Three trees are currently lying over gravestones in Bebington Cemetery, making it impossible and unsafe for some local people to visit the final resting places of their loved ones. They all fell during a period of particularly tumultuous weather in February, when we had storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin in quick succession.

Two rare 'red' warnings were issued for storm Eunice, making it the most severe storm to hit the UK for eight years. At least three people were killed across the nation.

One unnamed resident said: "It has been over a month now and we’re still waiting. These trees are now extremely hazardous.

"We cannot visit our family graves in safety. Why this has not been taken care of by Wirral Council?"

A Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the situation at Bebington Cemetery. The damage and potential risk caused by the fallen trees has been assessed and work to clear this site has been scheduled and will take place in the coming weeks.

“A number of damaging storms in recent months brought down around 800 public trees across the borough. We have an ongoing programme of work to deal with every single affected tree and clear them where appropriate, but with such a large volume of work to get through it is taking time. The priority has been to deal with trees that potentially posed a risk to people first.”
