Fury as Arcadia collapse sees Leeds Burton factory shut with 400 jobs lost

Hundreds of workers at Leeds Arcadia Burton face losing their jobs as the site is set to close.

Employees at the historic Burton site in Torre Road were told of the closure yesterday (Thursday) the GMB union has said.

The former Burton factory, now called Arcadia, has been in operation since 1922 and was most recently used as a distribution centre for Arcadia stores including Dorothy Perkins and Burtons.

They employ 400 people.

But after nearly 100 years and despite BooHoo’s purchase of the Burton brand, the facility now looks set to close.

A consultation period will begin on February 24, ending on April 30 when the site will shut its doors for good.

Jake O’Malley, GMB Organiser, said: “To see 400 hard-working people lose their jobs while like of Phillip Green and the administrators waltz off with millions is repugnant.

“A century of history and hundreds of good jobs down the pan – while Philip Green is living it up on his private yacht and the administrators pick the bones of the business clean.

“GMB will fight tooth and nail to make sure workers get what they deserve from this mess.”
