Further three men charged in connection with fight in Gateshead street

Three more men have been charged in connection with a fight which left two people in hospital.

Two men had already been charged following the disturbance in Gateshead earlier this year.

Shortly after 3.15pm on Friday, March 27, police received a report of a disturbance outside an address on Monument Court in Chopwell.

It was reported a number of men were fighting in the street and two men, aged 38 and 35, were seriously injured.

Police say they had suffered injuries consistent with a knife and blunt instrument.

The injuries were not life-threatening but one of the men’s injuries have been described as "life-changing".

Last month two men were charged with two counts of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm and remain in custody as they await their next court appearance.

Now police have charged a further three men in connection with the assault.

Ian Laws, 34, of Humber Street, Chopwell; James Wall, 34, of Cornhill, East Denton; and Danny Ree, of Brecon Close, Newcastle, have all been charged with wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

They have since appeared before magistrates and been remanded in custody to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on May 22.

Detective Constable Steve Patterson, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a serious assault that left two men very seriously injured in hospital.

“It happened in broad daylight in a residential area and would have been very concerning for residents and witnesses in the area.

“We acted swiftly to charge two people to court but our enquiries have continued and a further three people have now been charged.

“These kind of incidents are not acceptable and we will always take action to identify those we believe to be involved and put them before the courts.

“We hope our robust investigation has reassured those living in the area and we will continue to offer the victims support as the case progresses.”

Laws and Wall appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates’ last month while Ree appeared before the same court on Tuesday (May 5).

John Hickey, 35, of Sunny Way, Newcastle, and Tony Hall, 31, of Humber Street, Chopwell, also appeared in court last month after being charged in the days after the incident.

All five men are now on remand and will appear before Newcastle Crown Court at a future date.
