Further symptomatic COVID-19 mobile testing units to open in Ayrshire over next few days

Four mobile COVID-19 testing units will be set up across Ayrshire for five days next week.

The temporary facilities – set up in Newmilns, Ayr, Troon and Girvan – will allow people who have COVID-19 symptoms to get a free swab test as part of the government’s UK-wide drive to improve the accessibility of coronavirus testing for communities.

Tests must be booked in advance at: https://www.nhsinform.scot/test-and-protect or by calling 0800 028 2816. The online booking portals are available from 6pm the night before the testing unit arrives in the area.

The centres will operate as follows:

  • Newmilns: Fire Station, Loudoun Road on Sunday, February 7 between 10am and 6pm.
  • Ayr: John Pollock Centre, Mainholm Road on Monday, February 8 and Tuesday, February 9 between 10am and 6pm.
  • Troon: Troon Swimming Pool on Wednesday, February 10 from 10am and 6pm.
  • Girvan: The Quay Zone, Knockcushan Street on Thursday, February 11 and Friday, February 12 from 10am and 6pm.

If you’re attending the mobile testing centre, you’ll be asked to confirm your identity on arrival.

You will then be issued with a test kit and directed to a testing booth, where you will be given guidance to help you do the swab test yourself by taking swabs from both the nose and mouth.

If you have any of these symptoms you must self-isolate immediately, only leaving home to take a test. You should continue to self-isolate until you have received your result.

Councillor Peter Henderson, leader of South Ayrshire Council, said: “Symptomatic COVID-19 mobile test units will be situated across South Ayrshire for five days next week.

“The sites will provide further opportunity for people in these areas, who are experiencing coronavirus symptoms, to be tested locally.

“It’s crucial that anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19 books a test immediately.”

Further sites across Ayrshire are currently being considered as additional mobile testing locations and updates on these will be provided in due course.
