Further criticism for state of key Stewartry tourist road

The state of a key Stewartry road has come in from further criticism.

The number of potholes on the A710 is causing concern for people who use the road on a regular basis.

It comes after Richard Winter highlighted the state of the road surface, as well as the road to Kippford.

Dumfries-based gardener Gary Black, who regularly uses the road to get to the coast, said: “It’s progressively got worse over time.

“If you encounter oncoming traffic, you have to go through a severe pothole and there’s not really anything you can do to avoid it.

“That whole area relies heavily on tourism but the roads are so bad, if you were out there with a campervan you would never recommend the area to anyone you knew.

“You just need to hit one and it does real damage. I think it’s daft it’s gone on so long. It’s clearly a known problem.”

Southwick farmer George Dodd has also encountered problems – and not just drivers almost causing collisions when they try to avoid potholes.

He said: “The issue we have is we’re quite often taking stuff to market with two or three cows inside. That’s a live load, it moves, like a tanker carrying liquid.

“If you have two or three cattle in it and you slam the brakes on they all want to join you!

“When you’re towing a trailer, you can’t just snake out of the way of a pothole as your trailer starts to swerve.

“When your trailer hits the pothole, you’re looking in the mirrors to see if all your tyres are in place. If you do have a puncture, it’s a nightmare and you have to get the animals out.

“The road has a number of yellow marks on it so they’ve had complaints and are going to do something about it but the quality of tar they buy doesn’t seem to last, the patches put in are very rushed and temporary.”

A council spokesman said: “The A710 is inspected on a monthly basis. All defects recorded have been added to the works management system for action.

“ Currently all defects are actioned according to priority. An additional inspection will be undertaken to re-assess the section of road causing concern.”
