Further closure planned on A52 Clifton Bridge as investigations continue

Highways England is to close another section of the A52 tonight (February 20) to allow engineers to conduct further investigations.

The eastbound carriageway on Clifton Boulevard will be closed between the off-slip road to the A453 and the on-slip from Clifton Lane.

This means a diversion route will be established between 10pm on February 20 and 6am on February 21.

Engineers will be investigating a small section of the road to determine the next steps of the repair works on the bridge as a whole.

The diversion route is as follows:

  • After travelling eastbound over Clifton Bridge, traffic will be diverted towards Clifton on the A453.
  • Traffic must then exit on the very first slip road and once at the roundabout, take the third exit onto the B679, Clifton Lane.
  • Traffic must then follow this road until the small roundabout and take the second exit, this will then take motorists back onto the A52 eastbound.

Highways England said: "We are carrying out vital investigation works on the A52.

"Once complete, these investigation works will help to inform our decision around repair works on the A52 at Clifton Bridge.

"We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time."

Clifton Bridge was first closed on February 6 after corroded steel cables were found within the concrete structure.

One lane eastbound reopened a week after the damage was discovered.

More than 100,000 vehicles pass over the bridge every day, and the closures have caused widespread delays for weeks.

Work is not expected to be completed until the end of the year, Highways England previously told Nottinghamshire Live.
