Further chaos on M8 as emergency helicopter rushes to crash near Shotts

An air ambulance swooped down onto the M8 motorway after a horror three-car crash.

Emergency services raced to junction five, eastbound at Shotts, at around 3.30pm this afternoon.

Less than an hour later police sped to a second crash on the M8 when three cars collided at Glasgow Airport going eastbound.

Drivers are racing major delays on one of Scotland's busiest motorways following the two separate incidents.

One eyewitness filmed the air ambulance helicopter landing on the busy stretch of road.

Another shared a picture of the chopper along with the caption: "Huge crash on M8 never good to see this."

It is understood four ambulances, five fire appliances and five police vehicles are at the scene and the M8 is closed in both directions.

A third tweeted a picture of the helicopter and said: "Air Ambulance leaving scene of RTI on M8 Eastbound between J6 & J5."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "We were called at 3.33pm on Saturday, July 27, to reports of a road traffic collision involving three cars on the M8 between Hewhouse and Shotts.

"Operation control mobilised five appliances and firefighters are presently working at the scene alongside emergency service partners."

Update: The M8 remains closed eastbound at J5 with held traffic being managed under emergency service control. Westbound has now fully re-opened.
