Department store Debenhams has announced it is to cut 2500 jobs across the country - just weeks after the East Kilbride store was saved from closure.
It is yet a further blow for the high street with a number of big names falling victim to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The beleaguered chain was already in administration for the second time but managed to strike a deal with bosses at EK, East Kilbride to keep doors open in the town.
Twenty branches have already closed this year with the East Kilbride store previously having been given a reprieve.
The job cuts will affect roles across the entire Debenhams brand - including within its distribution centres.
But trade union Usdaw is calling for urgent talks with the retail giant's administrators.
The union says it is "deeply concerned" that the necessary consultation processes are not taking place and are preparing a legal challenge on behalf of members affected.
Dave Gill, Usdaw National Officer said: “This is more devastating news for staff who have been working under the threat of store closures and job losses for some time, having seen the company go into administration.
"We have been contacted by members who say they are being made redundant by conference call, with no meaningful consultation or proper notice period, as required by law. That is an appalling way to treat staff.
“We again urge the administrators to engage with Usdaw, the trade union for Debenhams staff. It’s crucial that the staff and their voice should be heard, that they are treated within the law and with the dignity and respect they deserve."
There is currently no breakdown for store-by-store cuts.
A spokesman for Debenhams said: "We have successfully reopened 124 stores, post-lockdown, and these are currently trading ahead of management expectations.
"At the same time, the trading environment is clearly a long way from returning to normal and we have to ensure our store costs are aligned with realistic expectations.
"Those colleagues affected by redundancy have been informed and we are very grateful to them for their service and commitment to Debenhams.
"Such difficult decisions are being taken by many retailers right now, and we will continue to take all necessary steps to give Debenhams every chance of a viable future."
