Further arrest over drive-by shooting in city centre as hunt continues for red Ford Mondeo

Police have made a further arrest and are continuing their search for a red Ford Mondeo following a chaotic drive-by shooting in the city centre this weekend.

Multiple gunshots were fired from the vehicle towards a silver Vauxhall Astra as the two cars raced through the streets.

Emergency services were called after the Astra crashed into a lamppost in St Peter's Square at around 8.30pm on Saturday evening.

Four occupants fled as police flooded the area.

Following a short footchase, three teenagers aged 15, 17 and 19 were arrested on suspicion of driving and firearms offences.

They have all been bailed pending further inquiries. A quantity of suspected drugs was also found, police said.

The red Ford Mondeo and its occupants managed to flee the scene, however, and remains outstanding.

It is understood a number of inquiries - including analysis of CCTV - are ongoing in a bid to trace the car.

This afternoon police revealed they have made a further arrest late night.

A 20-year-old man was detained in Manchester on suspicion of possession of a firearm, possession with intent to supply class A drugs, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of class B drugs.

He remains in custody.

St Peter's Square remained closed off for much of Sunday as forensics officers combed the scene for evidence.

The M.E.N understands detectives believe a total of four shots were fired, all from the red Mondeo towards the Astra.

Fortunately, it is believed no one suffered any injuries.

But the reckless shooting in the heart of the city centre has shocked leaders and police have promised swift action.

Detective Inspector Mark Astbury, from GMP's City of Manchester division, said: "Our investigation into Saturday night's firearms discharge is very much on-going and a number of officers have been and continue to carry out a number of lines of enquiry.

"There is a lot of work - which may not always be visible due to operational reasons - going on to tackle the use of firearms and disputes across Greater Manchester.

"We're continuing to ask the public to come forward with any information.

"Anyone who may have witnessed anything can call 0161 856 1146.

"Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
