Further 85 people die as UK coronavirus death toll continues to grow

A further 85 people have died after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Department of Health said the further 85 coronavirus deaths in the country takes the official UK total to 44,602.

This is the number of deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and community deaths.

A statement from NHS England said that 22 of the latest deaths occured in English hospitals.

The youngest of them was 53.

A spokesperson for NHS England said: "A further 22 people, who tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,991.

"Patients were aged between 53 and 94 years old. One patient, aged 77 years old, had no known underlying health conditions.

"Their families have been informed."

While all regions posted low totals today - all being under 10 - the North West has the largest number of deaths with 7.

The news comes as the government continues to move forward with reopening the country after the lockdown.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden will host a Downing Street press conference where he is expected to give an update on when gyms and leisure centres can open again.
