Further 4,570 Covid cases today alongside jump in hospital and ICU admissions

Irish health officials have today reported 4,570 cases over the past 24 hours as the surge of infection continues.

Meanwhile, a jump in hospital figures was seen again today as a further 40 people have been admitted to hospitals across the country this evening - totalling 622 - for severe side effects of the virus.

Meanwhile, 117 patients now require an ICU bed, marking an increase of 11 people on yesterday’s numbers.

Today’s update comes as the Cabinet sub-committee on Covid is set to meet this evening to discuss the latest recommendations by NPHET.

It was confirmed earlier today by an Taoiseach Micheal Martin that there will not be a requirement for a negative antigen test for access to pubs and nightclubs.

He also dismissed that Ireland would follow Austria and issue a lockdown for people who are unvaccinated.

It is understood that they are considering an update to the following Covid rules:

  • wider deployment of antigen testing
  • use of Digital Covid Certs in other areas of society - such as gyms
  • an extension to the requirement to work from home where possible
  • an expansion of the booster campaign
  • requirement to wear masks at outdoor sporting events

The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tony Holohan also said that the reintroduction of restrictions can not be ruled out in the future but such a move is not being considered at that time.
