Further 29 deaths at North East hospitals as 596 die in latest coronavirus figures

A total of 29 people died with coronavirus in the North East according to the latest figures released on Sunday.

Across the UK, 596 deaths were announced, bringing the total coronavirus death toll to 16,060.

The latest figures were collected between 5pm on Friday and 5pm on Saturday, although the deaths may have happened in the days before this.

On Saturday, 21,626 tests were carried out with 5,850 returning positive.

The Government has pledged to raise the number of daily tests to 100,000 within the next fortnight.

A list of frontline workers who are eligible to receive the test has also been recently expanded.

In the latest death figures, the highest number recorded by a North East NHS trust was eight in Newcastle.

All of the deaths listed happened in hospital where the patient had tested positive for coronavirus.

County Durham and Darlington - 4

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear - 0

Gateshead - 3

Northumbria - 7

South Tyneside and Sunderland - 4

Newcastle - 8

North Tees and Hartlepool - 3

South Tees - 0

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys - 0
