Furloughed Jaguar Land Rover worker fears 'more cuts by Xmas' as 200 offered redundancy

A furloughed Jaguar Land Rover worker has said he "fears being culled by Christmas" as the carmaker brings in a voluntary redundancy scheme.

It is understood that as many as 200 salaried and management staff have been offered the R-Programme, including workers in Solihull, Castle Bromwich and Wolverhampton, Birmingham Live reports.

The scheme affects less than one percent of JLR's 32,000 workers across the country.

In April 20,000 JLR workers were placed on furlough, with that 3,000 staff yet to be brought back as sites are still operating below capacity.

Now, one of the workers placed on furlough since lockdown in March has said he still fears for his future.

"The market has slowed. We heard about the redundancy scheme and worry more cuts will be made. I'm not one of those affected yet, but I don't know if I'll have a job by Christmas," the worker, who asked not to be named, told BirminghamLive.

"The uncertainty is very unsettling."

JLR was hit by a 42% fall in sales according to figures released covering April to the end of June.

"The market has slowed. We heard about the redundancy scheme and worry more cuts will be made. I'm not one of those affected yet, but I don't know if I'll have a job by Christmas," the worker, who asked not to be named, told BirminghamLive.

"The uncertainty is very unsettling."

In a statement JLR said: "As the UK Government’s furlough scheme comes to an end, Jaguar Land Rover is implementing a very small targeted voluntary redundancy programme for some management and salaried employees currently on furlough.

“This is a prudent step given the challenges facing the global automotive industry in which we compete, giving these employees the choice to consider new opportunities outside of the company having been out of the business for more than seven months."
