Furlough scheme end date: all changes to be aware from today in Scotland as the scheme winds down

As the country heads into its sixth month since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there are a few changes that will now come into play.

September will bring a series of new changes regarding the furlough scheme as the UK Government continues to wind down the initiative that has paid thousands of wages throughout lockdown.

The furlough scheme was started by Chancellor Rishi Sunak, with the government funding 80 per cent of the salary of those unable to work during the pandemic.

However, as lockdown measures have eased and the majority of businesses have been able to reopen, employers will now become more financially responsible for their staff again.

From August 1 employers had to start picking up national insurance and pension contributions for furloughed workers.

But from today (September 1), the government will only pay 70 per cent of wages up to a cap of £2,187.50 for the hours the employee is on furlough.

Employers will also have to pay national insurance and pension contributions and top up employees' wages to ensure they receive 80% of their wages up to a cap of £2,500, for the time they are furloughed.

This will then lead to the final month of the scheme in October where the government will pay 60% of wages up to a cap of £1,875 for the hours the employee is on furlough.

Employers will pay national insurance and pensions and top up employees' wages to ensure they receive 80% of their wages up to a cap of £2,500, for time they are furloughed.

September has also seen the end of the 'Eat Out to Help Out' scheme, which saw bars, pubs and restaurants across Edinburgh fully booked as locals headed out for their half price food.

Over the course of the month, the government allowed eateries to offer 50 per cent off and reimbursed businesses for the money taken off.

Despite the government funded scheme ending yesterday, many sites across the city have chosen to still offer significant discounts for September to continue to encourage customers.
