Furious woman swallows 16-inch gold necklace during family dispute

A woman needed emergency surgery to remove a necklace she swallowed during a family dispute.

Qui Xiuying, 52, of Binzhou in China's Shandong province, was rushed to hospital after ingesting the 40cm (15.7in) long gold chain in front of her family members on May 1.

Family members claimed Ms Qui had ripped off her necklace in anger and swallowed it following a heated row with her relatives.

Doctors at the Binzhou No 2 People's Hospital performed an abdominal X-ray on Ms Qui and found the jewellery lodged in her stomach.

The doctor told Qui's family: "Although her condition is stable at present, if the necklace is not removed quickly, the patient may have digestive tract perforation, bleeding and other risks."

He also said there procedure to remove it was more dangerous than normal as the necklace has a hook at the end.

Medical staff used a pair of forceps to extract the necklace through the digestive tract.

The doctor added: "There is no damage along the digestive tract or the lining of the stomach."

Ms Qui has now been released from hospital.
