Furious Rick and Morty fans threaten to boycott show over controversial 9/11 joke

Rick and Morty fans threatened to boycott the show over its controversial 9/11 and Pearl Harbour jokes.

Viewers slammed the show after it made a joke about the terrorist attack during an episode named Promortyus.

It aired in the US on Sunday May 10 and is set to air in the UK on Thursday May 14 on E4.

The controversial episode saw animated characters Rick and Morty fly towards two skyscraper towers before swerving away and choosing not to attack them.

Twitter fans were left raging after the characters went on to make a joke about their behaviour, as Rick said: "Honestly, I'm proud of us for not."

"Totally, would have been cheap," replied Morty.

But the joke doesn't stop there, as Rick and Morty fly over a harbour, which they successfully blew up.

Rick said: "Pearl Harbour on the other hand..." as the troublesome pair fly towards their target.

Later in the episode, the pair went on to meet Beth and Jerry, Morty's parents, for some breakfast.

Beth asked the boys: "So, you did a 9/11?"

While Morty replied: "Almost did a 9/11. We... we went with a Pearl Harbour. We're pretty classy."

After the episode ended, flocks of fans took to the social media site to share their outraged thoughts about the episode.

The 2001 terrorist attack on the towers saw 3,000 people die, while more than 2,400 people died during the Pearl Harbour attack in 1941.

"Is Rick and Morty still doing 9/11 jokes? Because wow, that’s so funny in 2020," one sarcastically penned.

"Not Rick and Morty with the 9/11 jokes," another added.

A third commented: "This season sucks and on top of it your making 9/11 jokes?"

"Boycotting Rick and Morty," a fourth wrote.
