Furious residents slam workers for parking vans along the pavement in Leeds city centre

Residents of Leeds were furious after finding their busiest shopping street's pavement totally obstructed with work vans.

The Headrow in Leeds city centre is regularly home to issues with vehicles blocking its pavements, meaning difficulty for wheelchair and pushchair access, and leaving some pedestrians worried about their safety.

A resident of Leeds, Ian Bewick, shared an image with the community where five work vans and cars were parked on the pavement.

Some residents explained their worries.

One said: "Avoid the Headrow if you've got mobility problems, or pushchairs."

Another added: "Apart from anything else pavements aren't made to carry the weight of vehicles...expensive paving stones crack, trip hazards are created, streets are degraded."

"Can't be easy doing shop fitting work in city centre, but this isn't a solution.

"It's amazing how people think it’s a right to park directly outside their home or place of work… Especially when it’s stealing the pavement.

"Contractors' vehicles often act as though they have a special dispensation to park where they want. Maybe contractors don't have arms or legs to walk and carry their tools?"

Leeds City Councillor Kevin Ritchie said: “Keeping pavements free of obstruction and accessible is vitally important for everybody in Leeds, I was pleased Parking Services were quick to deal with the issues on the Headrow.

"This whole area is subject to extensive roadworks for LPTIP, amongst other things they are building a new bus gate.

"I’m told the Council gives wide parking exemptions to the contractors to enable the work to happen as quickly as possible, they have been advised to park appropriately in the future, penalties will be issued if the parking is especially egregious.”

A spokesperson for Rohan Electrics said: "We originally parked in the loading bays however, we were instructed by the traffic wardens that we would be ticketed here and were told to park on the pavement as we wouldn't receive a parking ticket."

"Since, we have now been told we cant park on the pavement either and are now parking in the loading bays to load and unload then going to park in a nearby car park."
