Furious Piers Morgan slams UK minister on GMB for letting Cheltenham Festival go ahead

Piers Morgan has criticised the UK government countless times for being unprepared for the coronavirus pandemic in his eyes.

And now he has slammed the decision to let the Cheltenham Festival to go ahead last month.

Gloucestershire Live reports Piers Morgan told the Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey not enough action was taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Ms Coffey repeatedly made reference to the plan the government was following, before the Good Morning Britain host asserted that ‘plan didn’t work’.

He said: “We [the Government] had such a complacent attitude to this, that while other countries were locking down and preparing properly, we were sending hundreds of thousands of people out to the Cheltenham Festival out to football matches, and out to pop concerts.

"That’s why we’re so badly prepared because we spent weeks refusing to accept the severity of this crisis.

“Your plan didn’t work. You can keep telling me about your plan, your plan singularly didn’t work. That is why we still have PPE shortages, this is why we are doing a tiny fraction of the tests we need to do. You keep saying you had this plan, the plan didn’t work did it.”

Ms Coffey said: “Piers, the plan is being rolled out. We are seeing the acceleration of elements like testing, the five pillar strategy that is there.

“But coming back to the original plan, there was PPE, it wasn’t being delivered efficiently, so we recognised that. That is why we brought in the armed forces to help with that distribution. We are now having daily deliveries around the country in a way that wasn’t happening originally.

"We were conscious that aspects of equipment weren’t getting to the front line quickly enough.”

Over 250,000 people attended Cheltenham Festival, held over four days from March 10.

A spokesperson for Cheltenham Racecourse said following Gold Cup week: “The Festival took place four weeks ago and only went ahead under the clear and ongoing guidance from the government and its science experts throughout, like other popular sports events at Twickenham and Murrayfield, 10 Premier League matches and the UEFA Champions League at Anfield that same week.

“We promoted the latest public health advice and introduced a range of additional hygiene measures at the event, including hundreds of hand sanitiser dispensers and extra wash basins.”
