Furious members vow to fight to save Basford Miners' Welfare which was closed suddenly

Furious regulars at a social club which has closed down suddenly have vowed to fight to keep it open.

People were left stunned when it was emerged the Basford Hall Miners' Welfare in Goldcrest Road had closed on Monday, January 10.

An announcement on Facebook said "the club is closed with immediate effect" and that "further details will be given at a later point". The page has since been reset but the website is still live.

On Wednesday, January 12, members of the club gathered to discuss the news and plans to fight to save the club after it was reportedly put into liquidation.

The meeting was held at Stadium Leisure, on Nottingham Road in New Basford, with a big turnout from people who demanded answers and an explanation on why the club has closed so suddenly.

One member of the venue told others: "We do not let this drop - we are keeping our club open for our members."

Meanwhile, one man, who had paid £825 in full for a wedding reception due to take place , told the meeting his family have been left in limbo at the news.

"They are playing with people's lives here," he said.

At the meeting, a new committee was elected and plans were laid out to speak with the liquidators directly on Thursday, January 13.

The manager of the miners' welfare, Kevin Cotterell, said he was not aware of what was going on until 9.30pm on Monday, January 10.

Speaking previously to Nottinghamshire Live, Mr Cotterell said: "I'm completely shocked, I've been shaking since I was told last night.

"I had a pub in Grantham and I left that for this as, living in Stapleford, this is perfect for me; I've just purchased a campervan thinking everything is all right but then this happens.

"I've been here less than three months, but we've got booking all the way through this year, Fridays and Saturdays mainly, and it's such a shock.

"My phone has not stopped ringing."
