Furious lorry driver's rant at Extinction Rebellion protester while stuck in traffic

A lorry driver ranted angrily at an Extinction Rebellion protester while stuck in heavy traffic, accusing the campaigners of 'wasting police resources'.

The activists marched from Marble Arch to parliament today to welcome MPs back from the Easter break.

But Gary Smith, who works for a skip hire company, was furious about the disruption on the London roads.

He argued having vehicles idle with their engines on wasn't helping matters, as he stood stationary in traffic.

"This is ridiculous," He said in footage recorded by LBC.

"I'm trying to earn my money like everyone else is, and all it's doing is obstructing normal people.

"Go stand outside Whitehall.

"Surely you don't need to do this. Look how many people it's affecting.

"The police are on cuts as it is, and look how many police are here."

But the protester told Gary they're very grateful to police, adding "and we're grateful to you sir for waiting as well."

The number of the climate change protesters arrested topped 1,000 yesterday as demonstrations entered a second week.

The Metropolitan Police said 1,065 people had been arrested in connection with the demonstrations, while 69 of those had been charged.

Boris Johnson PRAISES Extinction Rebellion protests - despite calling them 'smug'

A statement from police said: "This number of arrests is unprecedented, and is diverting officers from their vital duty of tackling crime and keeping London safe, but they will continue to arrest those who occupy illegal protest sites and refuse to stop causing widespread disruption to the communities of London."

As of yesterday, about 10,200 Metropolitan Police Service officers have been deployed as part of the operation surrounding the Extinction Rebellion protests.
