Furious Jose Mourinho's angry refusal after Roma defeat ends Serie A record

After a solid start to the season, Jose Mourinho was dealt a blow when his Roma side lost to AC Milan on Sunday night.

Goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Franck Kessie gave the visitors a two-goal lead, with Stephan El Shaarawy pulling one back late on in a game which featured several bookings for both sides and a red card for Milan's Theo Hernandez.

Not only was the defeat Roma's first at the Stadio Olimpico this season, but it was Mourinho's first ever home defeat in Serie A after a dominant spell at Inter more than a decade ago.

Mourinho seemed frustrated after the result, but held back on making comments which might have seen him banned from the touchline for Roma's next game.

“Compliments to Milan,” Mourinho told DAZN in a brief post-match exchange.

“I don’t want to say anything else, because otherwise I won’t be on the touchline next week.

“I am angry at the lack of respect shown to the Roma fans. We did not play well, but we left everything on the pitch. We have that respect, others do not, and that angers me. That is all.”

“I made an effort and did not wait for the referee.”

The comments bring to mind Mourinho's assessment after a game between his Chelsea side and Aston Villa in 2014, where he bit his tongue after not being entirely happy with a refereeing display.

On that occasion, Mourinho's Chelsea had two players sent off in a defeat which dented their 2013-14 title hopes.

“I prefer not to comment much because I don’t want to bring the game into disrepute. I prefer to let it go," the manager said at the time.

"If you comment, you are in trouble. If I speak I am in big trouble and I don’t want to be in big trouble."

Mourinho has already been banned from the touchline this season, following an incident in Roma's match against Napoli.

His opposite number Luciano Spalletti was also dismissed that day, with the pair forced to watch their respective teams' next game from the sidelines.

The latest comments - or lack thereof - may well be enough to keep the former Tottenham Hotspur boss out of immediate harm's way.

The defeat against Milan wasn't enough to knock Mourinho's Roma side out of the Champions League spots in Serie A, though it was a first defeat for the manager at his new home ground after four wins and a draw.

They sit fourth, ahead of Atalanta on goal difference but 12 points behind joint-leaders Napoli and Milan.

Next up for Roma is a Europa Conference League game at home to Bodo/Glimt, who beat them 6-1 in Norway last month, before a return to domestic action away to Venezia.
