Furious GMB hosts lay into Tory minister over Marcus Rashford school meals jibe

Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Adil Ray clashed with MP Vicky Ford on the show on Thursday, as she suggested footballer Marcus Rashford MBE was not the driving force behind extending free school meals for children amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The footballer highlighted the issue of child poverty, and campaigned for free meals for all school pupils, as the closure of schools led to many children missing out meals.

The government had initially voted against providing the free meal vouchers, before making a U-turn - which many credited to Manchester United star Marcus' efforts.

After several families shared images of inadequate meal portions and qualities online, Marcus shared the images and campaigned for better meals for those that needed them.

But the Minister of Children and Families claimed she and her department had already been piloting the schemes, with plans in place for the vouchers and access to free meals.

As Susanna brought up how Marcus encouraged a quicker response and the necessary action, the Tory kept saying "no" suggesting that while Marcus' support was great, it wasn't him who got the plans in motion.

Susanna and Adil were appalled, suggesting she was more or less saying Marcus' involvement wasn't necessary and therefore downplaying his incredible achievements for some of Britain's poorest families.

As Susanna credited Marcus for the government U-turn and being behind the extension of free school meals, the MP told her: "No it isn't actually, Susanna.

"I had extended the free school meals to more groups of children right at the beginning of this lockdown."

Susanna asked if she was saying Marcus' work was "irrelevant", with the MP then stating he was being supportive of their work that she was already doing "way early on".

It's then that Susanna reminded her that she had voted against free school meals in parliament, which the government minister suggested was because there were other plans in place to deliver free meals.

Susanna referred back to Marcus' huge impact, especially with the meal packages, and how he managed to change what was being done.

Again, Vicky told Susanna "no" as she suggested her comments were incorrect, and repeated how she was already working on plans before Marcus campaigned - as the host told her not to "undermine" what he did.

Adil Ray and Susanna Reid accused Minister of Children and Families Vicky Ford of trying to take the credit away from Marcus Rashford (ITV)

She said: "Actually no, actually no, we had introduced the voucher scheme and done the top up funding and as soon as schools were asked to close to most pupils in this lockdown, it did take some time and there were some shocking pictures of a few lunchboxes...."

Adil hit back at her comments, saying: "Vicky, it was not a few. And I think what you are saying is that you spent time talking about piloting strategies and you had all of this in place, but people wanted action.

"In the end it took Marcus Rashford for you to really pull your sleeves up and to do something about it. That is what happened.

"And it was people posting across social media posting their boxes, which just shocked the nation. I think it is very disingenuous for you to come on here and try to take credit for it.

"It took the nation and Marcus Rashford to lead this."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
