'This is Dunbar not Benidorm' - Furious East Lothian locals vow to fight 'eyesore' hotel extension

Furious Dunbar locals are concerned their beloved seaside town will turn into Benidorm after planning permission was submitted to East Lothian Council to extend the Bayswell Park Hotel.

Drawings submitted to the council show ambitious plans for a huge extension to be built underneath the beachside hotel, to create room for new bedrooms and hot tub facilities.

But many Dunbar locals say the plans are a "monstrosity" because of how close it is to the beach promenade and are vowing to "object" the plans on the council website.

One local said: "Monstrosity - Dunbar is a seaside town not Benidorm."

A second raged: "I have commented on the council planning page, objecting to this monstrosity.

"There is no business case for this, the hotel is empty almost all the time and how will they deal with sewerage/rainwater waste? Please make objections to ELC planners."

A third added: "This is an eyesore would not fit in with surrounding and would ruin the whole area."

But not everyone is against the huge extension with one local arguing that it: "Looks lovely."

Another agreed adding: "I think it looks rather nice, tucked into the slope and the roof is below the current hotel's ground level, so wouldn't be obtrusive. It also proposes to improve the existing extensions to the hotel which would be good."

A third also liked the idea saying: "I trust the local planners to ensure that the final design is great quality, even if contemporary. If it makes Dunbar a destination of choice for well-heeled visitors who'll spend money in our brilliant local shops, why no?"

Edinburgh Live has reached out to East Lothian Council for comment.
