Furious drivers threaten to boycott Lanarkshire fuel station after seeing prices near £2 per litre

Local drivers are furious after seeing a Lanarkshire fuel station charge almost £2 per litre of diesel this week.

People are now threatening to boycott the Shell garage in Larkhall as motorists vent their rage.

The garage on Machan Road in the town is currently displaying petrol costing 176.9 pence per litre and diesel at 199.9 pence per litre.

It's understood this is an increase of as much as 20p since Monday this week.

The cost of living is constantly increasing across Lanarkshire, with the current crisis in Ukraine only adding to expensive rates of fuel.

Several posts on a Larkhall community social media page have already slated the fuel prices at the Shell garage.

One local said: "Two different services I've filled up with diesel on M6 during the night and this morning and they weren't as expensive as these swindlers."

Another added: "Absolutely disgusting just so so greedy, everyone should stay away, I'm sure they would think twice about the price then."

"Terrible when times are hard someone will profit but remember when it's over never forget this petrol station community should stick together", said a third.

The luxury of having a car could be seen less, as one local suggested: "The novelty of owning a car will soon come to an end if this keeps up."

Meanwhile another local stressed: "I hope the public remembers this when things settle down…and boycott it."

Only yesterday when the Larkhall station displayed diesel at 189.9 pence per litre, one resident posted: "If you buy fuel from this station you are contributing to the exploitation of the people of Larkhall. Boycott it now".

Lanarkshire Live approached Shell for comment on the steep prices where a spokesman explained that prices can fluctuate at service stations for a number of reasons.

These include, wholesale price and retail costs, which includes things like transporting the fuel to forecourts and running the service stations themselves.

They added: "Here in the UK, Shell owns and operates over half of Shell-branded service stations and we directly manage the prices at these stations.

"Others are owned by independent dealers. We are unable to comment on their pricing or tell them how to price their sales as that would be anti-competitive."

However hundreds of locals have continued to take to social media to express their anger at the rising fuel prices.

It was called "daylight robbery" by one local.

Another agreed, adding: "I was astounded at the price when I passed a couple of days ago, now this photo shows another huge increase.

"Won't be going there for my petrol."
