Roadworks turned 20-minute commute into 3-hour nightmare for furious drivers in Swansea's Fabian Way

Swansea's Fabian Way was brought to a virtual standstill with traffic trapped for 'hours' after roadworks and a lane closure.

The route can be one of the city's most congested, running as it does from Swansea's city centre through to Jersey Marine , Briton Ferry and the M4.

But on Monday evening, November 4, some rush hour drivers claimed it took them more than three hours to navigate the four-mile stretch.

The delays were caused by work at the Jersey Marine roundabout eastbound.

Neath and Port Talbot Council  said the work was critical due to recent flooding.

Many commuters, however, have criticised its timing and felt there was not enough traffic management in place.

Brian Doyle, 80 was travelling from Brynmill to Baglan and said the usual 20 to 30 minute journey took around two and a half hours.

What to do if you're stuck in traffic

"We left at around 6pm and got home at about 8:30, it was absolutely standstill and bumper to bumper. We looked out and there were no accidents just the one lane roadworks at the roundabout but there wasn't one workman in sight and nothing was being done about it," said Mr Doyle.

"It's only a stretch of four to six miles and it took us absolutely ages, I've never seen anything like it. I was getting so annoyed, I know if work needs carrying out that it needs doing but there was nothing in place to help traffic and it just seems stupid to do it at rush hour," he added.

Some people were wrongly blaming Swansea Council, when the work was actually being carried out by the neighbouring Neath Port Talbot authority....

Many other commuters posted across social media to express their frustration at the lack of information about the roadworks.

Elizabeth Davies said she left at around 5:30pm from West Cross in Mumbles and did not arrive at the Amazon warehouse in Skewen until 8:30.

While Lucy Jones said her usual journey from Singleton Hospital to Neath of 30 minutes turned into a two hour commute.

The heavy traffic also caused tailbacks throughout Swansea city centre and along the bay in Oystermouth Road, five miles from the roadworks, but it did not seem to affect the traffic inbound to Swansea.

Neath Port Talbot Council said the lane closure along Fabian Way was due to be removed by 4pm on November 5.

A spokesperson for the council said: "Following recent serious flooding, emergency work to unblock the drainage along the affected section is now complete. Further maintenance work is needed but this will be planned and carried out outside of peak travel times."
